PLATFORM SHOES: In the early 1930s, Moshe (Morris) Kimel designed the first modern version of the platform shoe for actress Marlene Dietrich.
MIRROR BALL: Originally called the "Myriad Reflector" was invented and patented in 1917 by Louis Bernard Woeste.
REWARDS PROGRAMS: Travel Points are an homage to S&H Green Stamps which were founded in 1896 by Thomas Sperry and Shelley Byron Hutchinson and were distributed as part of a rewards program operated by the Sperry & Hutchinson company, popular in the United States from 1896 until the late 1980s.
MUSIC: The first recovered piece of music was found in 800 BC. It was a religious hymn, written in cuneiform.
Within the past century, Dance music became enormously popular during the 1920s and in the 1930s, called the Swing era.
In the 1950s, Rock 'n Roll became the popular dance music.
The late 1960s saw the rise of Soul and R&B music, and the Dominican and Cuban New Yorkers created popular Salsa dancing which stemmed from the Latin Salsa music genre.
The rise of Disco in the early 1970s led to Disco music becoming popular with the general public.
BOWLING: The earliest form of bowling known to exist has been traced back to ancient Egyptian time, around 5,000 BC. The ancient Egyptians rolled stones at various objects with the goal of knocking them over.
The growth and popularity in bowling peaked in the mid-1960s, with about 12,000 bowling alleys!
Bowling's popularity leveled off in the 1970s and began to decline as other athletic interests claimed the public's attention.
Some believe, including myself, that the popularity of Disco Music & Clubbing helped cause the decline as well!
The good news is, Blaine's Travel Club is combining all the fun and history into Retro Bowling!
